About

Stephen Lochetto

I am a herpetologist and a folklorist — a scholar of animals as both biological and cultural subjects.

My work runs along two tracks that most people keep apart. As a herpetologist, I study the systematics of reptiles, including a morphology-based phylogenetic study of the African plated lizards of the genus Gerrhosaurus (Gerrhosauridae). As a folklorist and ethnographer, I study human–animal interaction — how raising and showing animals at 4-H projects and county fairs transmits culture between people and across generations.

faunalore — fauna + lore — is my name for where those two questions meet: how animals and people make sense of each other.
